How to Type Page Ranges Like 1-3, 5 When Splitting a PDF

In the ClueTrove Split PDF tool, type pages and ranges with commas, like 1-3, 5. You get one new file with your pages in the exact order you typed, repeats included.

Zero, numbers above the page count, backwards ranges and words are refused. No file is made, and nothing downloads.

The short answer

  • Range: two page numbers joined by a hyphen, such as 1-3.
  • List: separate items with commas, such as 1-3, 5, 8-10. Every number must sit between 1 and your page count.
  • Order: pages come out as typed. Type 3,1 and you get page 3, then page 1. This also reorders pages in one step.
  • Spaces: fine around commas and hyphens, never between page numbers. 1 3 becomes 13.
  • Reverse order: a backwards range like 3-1 fails. Type 3,2,1 instead.

How do I extract pages step by step?

  1. Press Choose a PDF file and pick your PDF.
  2. Check the page counter, for example Pages: 6.
  3. Under How to split, select Extract chosen pages into one file.
  4. In Pages to extract, replace the pre-filled range (1-6 on a 6-page file) with your pages, for example 1-3, 5.
  5. Press Split file.
  6. Read the status line. It says Done: one file with {p} pages, {s}. Your download has started. Here {p} is the page count and {s} is the file size.

The hint under the field reads Example: 1-3, 5, 8-10. In our test the download was named after your file with -pages added, for example lab6-a4-6pages-pages.pdf. The Split file button stays disabled until you choose a file, and nothing downloads until you press it.

What can I type in the Pages to extract field?

On a 6-page file, the tool accepted all of these forms:

  • A single page: 2 or 6.
  • A range: 1-3, 1-6, or 1-1 (just page 1).
  • A mix of pages and ranges: 3,1 or 5-6,1-2 or 6-6,1.
  • Spaces around numbers, hyphens and commas: ” 1 – 3 , 5 ” works.
  • A leading zero: 01 is read as page 1.
  • Extra commas: in 1,,3 the empty item is ignored, so you get pages 1 and 3. A trailing comma, as in 1,3, is ignored too.
  • A semicolon instead of a comma: 1;3.
  • An en dash (1–3), an em dash (1—3) or a minus sign (1−3) instead of a hyphen. All read as 1-3.
  • Arabic-Indic digits and the Arabic comma: ١-٣ reads as 1-3, ١،٣ as 1,3, and ٢-٣،٦ as 2,3,6. Persian digits work too: ۱-۳ reads as 1-3.

The tool turns these characters into ordinary digits, commas and hyphens before it reads the range. So you can paste a range from almost anywhere.

In what order do the pages come out?

Exactly as you type them, always in one output file. The tool does not sort pages and does not remove repeats.

  • 3,1 gives page 3, then page 1.
  • 5-6,1-2 gives pages 5, 6, 1, 2.
  • 1-3,2 gives 4 pages: 1, 2, 3, 2.
  • 2,2,2 gives 3 pages, all copies of page 2.

That makes the field a mini editor. You can pull out pages and reorder them in a single step. On a test file that mixed page sizes and rotations, 4,6,5 gave the pages in that order, and each page kept its own size and rotation.

Why does it say “Enter valid page numbers”?

The tool could not read your entry, so it made no file. The message looks like Enter valid page numbers between 1 and 6, for example: 1-3, 5. The number in the message is your file’s page count. The cursor jumps back to the field so you can fix the entry.

On the 6-page test file, these entries were refused:

  • Pages outside the file: 0, 7, 1-7, 0-3 and 1,7.
  • A backwards range: 3-1. Type 3,2,1 for reverse order.
  • Incomplete ranges: 1- and -3.
  • Ranges with too many parts: 1-2-3.
  • Decimals and words: 1.5, a and all.
  • An empty field or a lone comma.
  • Spaces used as separators: 1 3 and 1,3 5.

Why does a space not separate pages?

The tool removes all spaces before it reads the range. So 1 3 becomes 13, and 1,3 5 becomes 1,35. On a 6-page file both are out of range, so they fail. The Arabic-digit entry ١٢ is the number twelve and failed for the same reason.

By the code, 1 3 would probably be read as page 13 on a file with 13 or more pages. We did not test that. Always put a comma between page numbers.

Which mistakes waste the most time?

  • Typing a space instead of a comma. It silently glues numbers together. On a long file it may even succeed with the wrong page.
  • Typing a range backwards. 3-1 fails. List the pages one by one.
  • Forgetting the pre-filled range. The field starts as 1-6 on a 6-page file. Replace it, or you extract everything.
  • Counting from the printed page number. The tool uses the position in the file, the number the counter shows, not the number printed on the page.

Who is this for, and who can skip it?

Use this guide if you need a few pages out of a larger PDF, or the same pages in a new order. Skip it if you want every page as its own file. That is a different mode, covered under limits below.

Why can a range select pages at all?

PDF is an ISO standard, ISO 32000. The current Part 2 (PDF 2.0) is ISO 32000-2:2020. According to ISO’s abstract, the standard defines a digital form for electronic documents so that people can exchange and view them regardless of the environment where they were created, viewed or printed. The Library of Congress notes that a PDF file typically represents a formatted, page-oriented document. That page structure is why a range can pick pages out of a file.

What did our test show?

These are results of ClueTrove’s own test of its tool. We ran it on a frozen local copy of the live Split PDF build 1.5.5, served from 127.0.0.1 with every outside request blocked. The first run was on build 1.5.3. We re-ran the full suite unchanged on 1.5.5 with the same outcomes. The test date was 2026-10-07, in headless Microsoft Edge 154.0.4258.48 on Windows. Other files can give different results.

  • Main input: a generated 6-page A4 file (lab6-a4-6pages.pdf, 4,972 bytes), each page labelled with its number. The counter read Pages: 6, and the field was pre-filled with 1-6.
  • 1-3, 5: with Extract chosen pages into one file selected, this gave one 4-page file with pages 1, 2, 3, 5 in that order. Each page kept its source size (595.28×841.89 pt) and rotation 0, and rendered pixel-identical to its source page (maximum channel difference 0). The status read Done: one file with 4 pages, 2 KB. Your download has started.
  • 39 range entries: 22 were accepted and 17 refused. Every accepted entry gave the expected pages in the right order, pixel-identical to the source. All 17 refusals created no download.
  • Two language pages: the English page and the Arabic (right-to-left) page gave the same 39 of 39 outcomes. Status and refusal messages appeared in the page language.
  • Longer file: on a generated 301-page file, 1-3, 301 gave a 4-page file (2 KB), and 1-301 gave a 301-page file (78 KB).
  • Wording quirk: on the English page, a one-page result reads Done: one file with 1 pages, 1 KB. Your download has started.

Times were single runs on one machine. A 3-page extract took 28 to 55 ms. Treat that as indicative, not a promise.

What are the tool’s limits?

  • One file of up to 100 MB at a time, with no limit on how often you use it. The 100 MB figure comes from the tool’s code; we tested no file near that size.
  • The one-file-per-page mode accepts up to 300 pages. A 301-page file is refused in that mode, but page ranges still work on it.
  • Pages keep their look, size and rotation. Bookmarks, interactive form structure and document properties (title, author, subject, keywords) are not kept. Internal links stay only when the page they point to is in the output.
  • In the one-file-per-page mode, output can be much larger than the source when pages share images. We measured 5.99 times the source size in one test.
  • The tool page says files are processed only in your browser, with nothing uploaded and no account needed. We did not audit security or privacy.

Not covered: the deployed site, real scanner or office PDFs, encrypted or very large files, other browsers and phones, drag and drop, and whether form fields stay fillable (the tool’s own note says they may not).

Questions and answers

Can I extract pages in a different order?

Yes. Type them in the order you want, for example 3,1 or 5-6,1-2. In our tests the output always followed the typed order, in one file.

Can the same page appear twice?

Yes. 2,2,2 gave three copies of page 2, and 1-3,2 gave pages 1, 2, 3, 2.

Why does it say enter valid page numbers?

Something in the field could not be read. Common causes are a number above the file’s page count, 0, a backwards range like 3-1, a word, a decimal, or spaces used instead of commas. No file is created, so fix the entry and press Split file again.

Can I use spaces instead of commas?

No. Spaces are removed before the range is read, so 1 3 becomes 13. Spaces around commas and hyphens are fine, as in 1 – 3 , 5.

Do Arabic or Persian digits work?

Yes. In our tests ١-٣ and ۱-۳ were read as 1-3, and the Arabic comma worked as a separator. En dashes, em dashes, minus signs and semicolons were accepted too.

How do I get every page as a separate file?

Use the one-file-per-page mode instead of the extract mode. It accepts files up to 300 pages.
