Use chat to talk, Cowork to get office work done across files, and Claude Code to change code. All three share one subscription, and on Pro and Max, chat and Claude Code draw on the same five-hour and weekly limits.

Anthropic calls Claude Code “an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands.” It says Cowork uses “the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required.” Pick by the job, not by the brand.

The short answer

  • Claude chat: best for questions, writing, analysis and uploaded files or images. It works on the free plan too.
  • Cowork: best for multi-step knowledge work such as documents, files and research. No terminal needed, and paid plans only.
  • Claude Code: best for code. It runs in terminals, IDEs, the desktop app and the web.
  • Limits: chat and Claude Code share one pool on Pro and Max. Heavy agent work burns it faster than quick questions.

How do the three compare side by side?

Claude chat Cowork Claude Code
Main use Answers and drafts in conversation Complex multi-step tasks on documents, files and research Reads a codebase, edits files, runs commands
Needs a terminal No “No terminal required” Runs in terminal, IDEs, desktop app and web
Plans Free and paid Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise (Free not included) Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console account (Free not included)
Local files Uploads Reads and writes local files on desktop; cloud sessions and scheduled tasks run without your device Works in your project directory
Usage Shared limits Uses more of your limit than quick questions Shared with chat on Pro and Max

Cowork needs the Claude Desktop app for local files and computer use, according to its help article. Plugins work across chat, Cowork and Claude Code. All Claude Code surfaces share the same engine, CLAUDE.md files, settings and MCP servers.

What can Cowork actually do for you?

Think of Cowork as Claude Code’s engine pointed at office work. Anthropic’s help article lists the kinds of jobs it handles:

  • Files: organize folders, turn receipts into expense reports, rename files in bulk.
  • Research: combine web sources and notes into a report, or pull themes out of transcripts.
  • Documents: build Excel files with working formulas, slide decks from rough notes, polished reports from messy inputs.
  • Data: run statistical analysis, make charts, clean datasets.

Cowork runs in an isolated environment on Anthropic’s servers. It can only read and write folders you connect, and it needs your explicit permission before permanently deleting files. An internet connection is required throughout the session.

How do limits and billing work?

Pro and Max have a five-hour session limit plus a weekly limit that chat and Claude Code share. API credits bill separately at API rates.

Cowork tasks that run code, create files or use connected apps and browsers use more of your usage than a quick question. To stretch your limit, group related work into one task, start a new conversation for unrelated work, and check Settings, then Usage. See our guide to Claude usage limits.

Which should you use?

  1. Writing, research questions, reading a document: chat.
  2. A multi-step office task across files, no coding: Cowork.
  3. Changing code in a repository: Claude Code. Start with the install guide.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not use Claude Code for a spreadsheet job. Cowork is built for that and needs no terminal.
  • Do not start a long Cowork task without checking your usage first, because it eats more of your limit than chat does.
  • Do not expect Cowork on the Free plan. It needs Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.

Questions and answers

Is Cowork the same as Claude Code?

No. It uses the same agentic architecture but targets knowledge work such as documents, files and research, and it needs no terminal.

Do chat and Claude Code have separate limits?

No. On Pro and Max, Anthropic says all activity in both tools counts against the same limits, as “one unified subscription.”

Is Claude Code better than Claude chat?

Neither is better overall. Claude Code edits files and runs commands in your project. Chat answers and drafts in a conversation. Choose by the job.

What is Claude Cowork?

Cowork is Claude’s agentic tool for non-coding work. It plans and carries out multi-step tasks on documents, files and research, and it can produce spreadsheets, slide decks and formatted documents.

Can I use Cowork on a free account?

No. Cowork is available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans only.
